Though it may be nothing but the result of an evolutionary die roll determining the number of fingers we have, ten is a number imbued with meaning. That the launch of our tenth issue comes so quickly on the heels of our second anniversary truly cements the realization that AE has become a thing unto itself.

We get a lot of stories about pronouns in our inbox — characters who have no other handles than “he” and “she” or “I” and “you.” There’s a certain seductiveness for an author to leaving names unspecified — not only can you avoid coming up with an appropriate one, but you can argue that leaving things more open-ended allows readers to can fill in the blanks from experience and identify more closely with the characters. But there’s a risk associated with it as well.

Refugees looting corpses, children darting into dark crevices. “The world is too changed to understand, so we focus on the things we can understand. Small things.” He shrugged. “We’re next. Double check your papers.”
