Four years. If AE were a person it would have just started junior kindergarten. But magazines grow up far faster than that, especially today. We say a ten-year old dog is seventy in “dog years” because, like a seventy-year-old human, that dog is starting to get within spitting distance of its life expectancy. If we apply that logic to magazines, AE is ancient. Only 20% of new periodicals survive to celebrate a fourth birthday, making us about 90 in magazine years.

Welcome back for Issue 11. AE continues to grow and we are doing our best to manage without too many visible growing pains or too much premature aging for our editorial staff. Without dwelling too much on statistics, our readership (as estimated by monthly unique non-automated visitors) is more than three times what it was one year ago. And in April 2012, our readership was nearly three times what it was in April 2011.

Though it may be nothing but the result of an evolutionary die roll determining the number of fingers we have, ten is a number imbued with meaning. That the launch of our tenth issue comes so quickly on the heels of our second anniversary truly cements the realization that AE has become a thing unto itself.

Earlier this year, AE was officially accredited as a professional market by the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America. There are fewer than thirty publications worldwide so recognized, placing us in such rarefied company as Asimov’s, Analog and Canada’s own ChiZine. More and more of these markets are offering their stories for free online, as AE does, but thus far we are the only professional market to embrace Creative Commons licensing (or any similar model).

There are only seven basic plots, we are told. Or twenty-four. Or one. It’s an interesting and even useful idea, but its misapplication runs rampant. There are few things more frustrating than hearing some variation on “it’s just a retelling of the Icarus myth” put forth as criticism.

I have limited patience for long stories. When I heft a book like War and Peace or Cryptonomicom or Infinite Jest, I feel a sort of fatigue before I even turn to the first page. Sometimes these epics turn out to be a fantastic investment of time – Ulysses is over nine hundred pages long, for example – but even when they are, I can’t help but wonder if the story couldn’t have been told better in less space.

Spending time representing AE at conventions over the past year, I’ve been reminded again and again that few people in the world bring such passion to their interests as science fiction fans. It’s a fundamental trait of the geek personality to latch onto some object of fascination and fall entirely down the rabbit hole. But there’s a dark side to this laser-like attention as well. As easy as it is to love something, it can be easier to loathe it.
