The SFWA Recognizes AE Print

Let’s go back to the very beginning. When AE was but a glimmer in our eyes, the thing that kept us going, that made us actually do this crazy thing, was the idea that Canadian SF writers deserved, needed, a professional domestic market. There were and are a number of fine Canadian science fiction publications, but not one1 among them that met the rigorous standards of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America.

We are proud to announce that this is no longer the case. AE is the newest addition to the list of SFWA qualified markets.

It is humbling and thrilling to join such venerable publications as Asimov’s and Analog on this short list of thirty-two professional English-language markets.

For our authors, this means that all sales to us of $50 or more (meaning 834 words) will now qualify towards SFWA membership. Of particular note to authors we have previously published is that this qualification extends retroactively to our start of regular publication on October 27, 2010.

1. Canadian magazine The Chiaroscuro is an SFWA qualifying market (and also awesome). The Chiaroscuro, however, does one thing and does it well. That one thing is “Dark Fiction” which, while it overlaps with SF, left a wide swath of Canadian science fiction with no professional home.
